THE STORY BEHIND THE RECORD
R.H. and Gladys McMillan described a family-led effort that took them across the Southeast, into archives and courthouses, and as far as Scotland. Their aim was to gather scattered family knowledge into one lasting reference.
The compilers consulted family Bibles, letters, photographs, cemetery inscriptions, census records, courthouse files, church records, and state archives—then compared those findings with information shared by relatives.
The book follows the family story from Scottish clan traditions through settlement in North and South Carolina and onward into Georgia, placing individual family lines within a broader migration history.
Readers will also find McMillan spelling variants, clan and sept connections, church history, community life, and accounts of the families and places that shaped successive generations.
The original compilers openly acknowledged that a record of this scale could contain errors or omissions. This edition preserves their 1973 work as a family and historical resource.
